I started running Friendica instance on my VPS. With help of Jonas Smedegaard I managed to run Friendica in a uWSGI container. The site was running at samsargika.copyninja.info and is no longer accessible. Since VPS itself was running Debian Wheezy I couldn't run uWSGI with PHP support on it. (support for PHP in uWSGI landed after Wheezy). But Jonas was kind enough for me to provide a backported version. Recently Wheezy got a security update for PHP and thats where all the problem started. The backported uwsgi-plugin-php was not recompiled to use security updated PHP and I couldn't upgrade the things. After few days I noticed first freeze on my VPS and I had to reboot the VPS to get it online again. The fact I noticed was uWSGI being killed due to a OOM in syslog but I didn't explore much and consulted Jonas to get a updated uWSGI. But that didn't happen as Jonas himself is facing some problem with uWSGI builds. While again checking with aptitude for upgrade I accidentally confirmed removal of uwsgi-plugin-php for getting security updates :-/. But nothing happened to my running service as upgrade of libs in Debian doesn't cause the restart of all services which are using that lib (desired effect is restart of service but I don't know the side affects involved). Second freeze happened yesterday and on the reboot uwsgi-plugin-php was missing there by taking my Friendica instance down. More closer investigation showed the same OOM but this time I noticed each OOM occurred just after cronjob was running poller.php a script which is actually causing all federation in Friendica. So it was clear there is something wrong either in poller.php or in my setup which was making it eat memory and freeze my VPS. But I also found some stupidity I did during configuration which Jonas also pointed me out.

1. Installing cronjob inside crontab rather than cron.d
2. Installing poller.php crontab for root user :-/

I basically violated the basic rule by running a unsafe script as root user, good that script didn't do some crazy stuff. So even though my instance went down I learnt my lessons

1. Don't ever ever ever run a unsafe script as root that too through cron
2. Sandbox the unsafe script so it can be killed on time rather than it taking the whole system down.
3. PHP is not really secure, if it was secure there wouldn't be security updates and atleast my site would be still running :-D

So I now need to wait till Jonas get me new shiny backported uWSGI linked against new PHP on Wheezy and till that time I need to explore on how I can sandbox the poller.php script.

On saturday 25. of May I gave a talk about FreedomBox at the "Claim back your device" track of LinuxTag in Berlin. LinuxTag is a fairly big annual conference about (yes, you guessed right) Linux and related topics. The FreedomBox is a project to help non-geeks care about their personal privacy when online, same ways as geeks have practiced for a decade or more. Concrete goal is to design a small, cheap physical box similar to an internet gateway or wifi router but with three additions:

• Easy and intuitive to setup and personalize for non-geeks
• Offers routines to help you protect your privacy
• Offers routines to let you help others in need of privacy

Today I'm writing this blog with saddened heart. My mentor and a best friend Dr.Ashokkumar is no more. He died yesterday after fighing with Lymph Node cancer. Ashokkumar or Ashok sir that is how we all students used to address him, was a Professor in Information Science Engineering in NMAM Institue of Technology and recently transferred to Computer Science Engineering Departement. My last meeting him with him was last year December during which he was looking every bit okay other than he had knee pain because of which he couldn't walk freely. But I never imagined that it will be my last meeting with him. Ashok sir was also behind the FLOSS event that took place in NMAM Institute of Technology including MiniDebconf 2011 which saw 2 of the foreign DD's Christian Perrier and Jonas Smedegaard. It was because of his first organized FLOSS event which I volunteered called Linux Habba I entered into the FLOSS world. This means its because of him that I started my FLOSS world journey and reached to my current level. Also it was because of his motivation I started writing this blog which I continue till this day.

I whole heartedly thank Ashok sir for teaching me guiding me and motivating me during my difficult times. You will always be remembered through out my life. May your soul Rest In Peace.

On wednesday 7. of November I gave a talk at EPFSUG in Brussels about FreedomBox. EPFSUG is an interest group of Free Software users working inside the European Parliament. The FreedomBox is a project to help non-geeks care about their personal privacy when online, same ways as geeks have practiced for a decade or more. The goal is a small, cheap physical box looking like and operating like an internet gateway or wifi router many are accustomed to nowadays - but with three additions:

• Easy and intuitive to setup and personalize for non-geeks
• Offers routines to help you protect your privacy
• Offers routines to let you help others in need of privacy

"Privacy" is commonly mistaken as "secrecy": Privacy is to keep you in control of your information - you can then use that control to keep secrets from others or to share with others as you like. Talking about personal privacy in the European Parliament can seem a bit of a stretch. It is not a home but a (huge) office space, where it is perhaps less obvious that you should treat some information as personal, or that you are even allowed to do so. Try watch the videos, and if you have questions then please don't hesitate to get in touch with me about them. At the EPFSUG meeting was also a presentation by an emplyee who had succesfully installed and used Free Software at the internal network of the Parliament, but then later told that it wasn't allowed - because the IT staff need to be in control of your computer activities at the place! The head of IT services at the Parliament attended the meeting and gave a short improvised talk at the end, expressing positive interest in behalf of the established IT services at the place towards our grassroots activities - and even praising explicitly EPFSUG as being the ideal place for all EU citizens to ask questions about Free Software in relation to the European Parliament. Today Sunday November 11th I give a talk at FSCONS in Gothenburg about FreedomBox. FSCONS is an annual scandinavian hacker conference, with a very friendly attitude and atmosphere. The FreedomBox is a project to help non-geeks care about their personal privacy when online, same ways as geeks have practiced for more than a decade. The project is exciting in that is frames a common dream among lots of hackers and therefore sparks new innovation and renewed commitment. The goal is frustrating to tackle, because us hackers most often solve problems close to ourselves (a.k.a. is driven by "an itch to scratch"), and only very few of us are interface designers, which are crucially needed to make things usable for non-geeks. Dear project members, here's another report of DPL activities, this time for a period longer than usual (February + 1st week of March), so that the next one will be at the very end of the current DPL term. Highlights

• As you know, we are now well within the DPL election process. And we have 3 valuable candidates running. I encourage all of you to participate in the discussions on -vote, and ask questions about project vision, goals, and improvements. It's something that is rarely as intense as during campaigning, so don't miss the chance!
• You might have noticed a sharp decrease in the count of RC bugs affecting Wheezy; that is largely due to the Release Team, who started the usual final sweep of RC triaging before release. Please thank them for their work, ... but don't give up on our collective work yet! You can still help up in the usual ways (NMUs, severity adjustments, unblock reviews, etc).
• The technical committee had to deal with a rather urgent issue during last month (#699808). I mention it here only to applaud their efficiency in doing so: 4 days to reach a decision. Resorting to tech-ctte shall always remain a last resort in Debian, but when it comes to that it's useful to know that we can count on a wise and speedy answer.

Appointments

• As the previous term was about to end, I've agreed with the Kurt Roeckx to re-appoint him as Project Secretary for another year.
• Following up to last month news, we've now assembled a team of admins for Debian participation into Google Summer of Code 2013 and delegated them for the task. Many thanks to David, Nicolas, Paul, and Sukhbir for volunteering, as well as to last year admins for their help in reaching out to interested volunteers. On a related note, we've until March 28th to propose projects and/or volunteer as (co-)mentor for GSoC 2013.

DPL helpers Two more DPL helpers IRC meetings have happened, minutes and logs of both are available. Assets

• I've worked with the press and publicity teams to announce the new trademark policy more widely and call for producing Wheezy merchandise. Apparently, we are now also being cited as a reference on how to strike a balance between free software and trademark (unfortunately the article is behind a paywall now).
• In related news, Brian Gupta has volunteered to help with answering trademark@d.o inquiries and has already helped a lot in streamlining the process and keeping track of past requests (thanks!)
• Following a -project inquiry by Thomas Koch, I've investigated with SPI the possibility of assigning to them the copyright for (code) contributions to Debian. The bottom line is that at present there is no safe way to do that with SPI; that might change in the future.
• As agreed at a DPL helpers meeting, we are trying to federate interests in Debian sponsoring and fund-raising. Part of the goal is avoid duplication of efforts DebConf- and sponsoring for other Debian activities; and part is establishing a more stable income flow for Debian (to ease long-term budget decisions). If you have experience and interest in this area, please join the debian-sponsors-discuss list on Alioth.
• Together with auditors, we have updated reimbursement procedures to better keep track of both outstanding and past requests. Main difference is that you'll now have to mail a RT queue instead of leader@d.o directly. Check the wiki page for details.

Events Past At the beginning of February, I've attended FOSDEM 2013, together with many other Debian people. I didn't have any specific talk this year, but it's been a chance to talk F2F about several ongoing issues (see logs), and help mediating in some conflicts. I've also accepted the invitation to participate in the GNOME Advisory Board meeting, together with Laurent Bigonville of our GNOME team. No report of that has been prepared as of yet (sorry about that), but we have both reported "live" to the rest of the team on IRC. Future

• It looks like my last month as DPL will be quite busy. Next week I'll be first in New York City, delivering an invited Debian talk at NYLUG (thanks a lot to Brian Gupta and Tom Limoncelli for the invitation). Then I'll head to LibrePlanet 2013 to talk about the relationship between Debian and GNU (thanks to John Sullivan for the invitation). Finally, at the beginning of April, I'll be in Amsterdam to deliver a talk about Debian experience with various legal issues across the years, at the yearly FSFE Legal and Licensing Workshop (thanks to Karsten Gerloff for the invitation). Both trips (LibrePlanet and FSFE) will be on Debian budget. While I usually insist on having travel sponsorship from inviting entities, in this cases I've accepted to do otherwise given they are free software non profits like Debian.
• I've been invited to represent Debian at Distro Recipes. Due to a conflict with FSFE workshop I couldn't make, so I've looked for substitutes. Lucas Nussbaum and Jonas Smedegaard have kindly accepted to go in my stead and deliver two talks, one about QA and the other about Pure Blends; thanks folks!

Miscellaneous A couple of months ago I've mentioned that I had filed an application, as Debian representative, to participate in a working table to define software procurement rules for the Italian public administration. Good news: my application has been accepted, together with those of other well-known FOSS communities and organizations (e.g. KDE, FSFE). I'll keep you posted of how it goes. It has been a while since I wrote about bitcoin, the decentralised peer-to-peer based crypto-currency, and the reason is simply that I have been busy elsewhere. But two days ago, I started looking at the state of bitcoin in Debian again to try to recover my old bitcoin wallet. The package is now maintained by a team of people, and the grunt work had already been done by this team. We owe a huge thank you to all these team members. :) But I was sad to discover that the bitcoin client is missing in Wheezy. It is only available in Sid (and an outdated client from backports). The client had several RC bugs registered in BTS blocking it from entering testing. To try to help the team and improve the situation, I spent some time providing patches and triaging the bug reports. I also had a look at the bitcoin package available from Matt Corallo in a PPA for Ubuntu, and moved the useful pieces from that version into the Debian package. After checking with the main package maintainer Jonas Smedegaard on IRC, I pushed several patches into the collab-maint git repository to improve the package. It now contains fixes for the RC issues (not from me, but fixed by Scott Howard), build rules for a Qt GUI client package, konqueror support for the bitcoin: URI and bash completion setup. As I work on Debian Squeeze, I also created a patch to backport the latest version. Jonas is going to look at it and try to integrate it into the git repository before uploading a new version to unstable. I would very much like bitcoin to succeed, to get rid of the centralized control currently exercised in the monetary system. I find it completely unacceptable that the USA government is collecting transaction data for almost all international money transfers (most are done in USD and transaction logs shipped to the spooks), and that the major credit card companies can block legal money transactions to Wikileaks. But for bitcoin to succeed, more people need to use bitcoins, and more people need to accept bitcoins when they sell products and services. Improving the bitcoin support in Debian is a small step in the right direction, but not enough. Unfortunately the user experience when browsing the web and wanting to pay with bitcoin is still not very good. The bitcoin: URI is a step in the right direction, but need to work in most or every browser in use. Also the bitcoin-qt client is too heavy to fire up to do a quick transaction. I believe there are other clients available, but have not tested them. My experiment with bitcoins showed that at least some of my readers use bitcoin. I received 20.15 BTC so far on the address I provided in my blog two years ago, as can be seen on the blockexplorer service. Thank you everyone for your donation. The blockexplorer service demonstrates quite well that bitcoin is not quite anonymous and untracked. :) I wonder if the number of users have gone up since then. Dear Facebook friend, I like you and I am happy that you take/tag/share photos of me, just not on Facebook! I have a Facebook account but don't hang out there. Please share your photos in public, not (only) inside Facebook. And please consider allowing Free reuse of your photos, by licensing them with a Free license like CC-BY-SA or CC0.

Here & Now My suggestion for now is to use Flickr, and license all images as "Attribution, share alike".

The Perfect Way Ideally you would publish the photos on some server that you control, like the Freedombox, but those are unfortunately not yet easy to find or use.

Why not Facebook? Facebook is a closed system: all activities happen at one central place. Maybe you don't care who is spying on the photo gallery that you share. That's fine - but please respect those of your friends who do care, by putting a copy of your photos somewhere with less thirdparty control. Regards, Jonas

I want all my computing environments "furnished" similarly and as close to my personal taste as possible - be it big and small machines, self-administered and user accounts of others. and not only for myself - similar is needed for the environments I help maintain for my friends Siri, Erik and Peter. The environments are seldom fully equal, so simply copying things around is rarely useful. Here's a checklist of things that I need to customize and syncronize for me and my friends to feel at $HOME :

• System-wide
  • Tools available on the system
  • Graphical login and Desktop environments
  • Adjust fonts, colors etc. of terminal emulator, file manager etc.
  • Register SSH in monkeysphere, MAC in DHCP and hostname in DNS
• Account
  • Syncronize browser bookmarks
  • Install/configure browser search plugins, config tweaks etc.
  • Setup email and messaging accounts, and syncronize archives
  • Syncronize development scripts, git repositories etc.
  • Register account in monkeysphere

Above is work-in-progress. I hope to later extend with more details - probably by linking to separate pages about each subtopic.

Geeky IRC Many computer geeks hang out on IRC. I find it ugly and clumsy to use, but most of my techie friends are there, so I recommend going there to discuss technical matters. On OFTC my nickname is jonas, and I often hang out at the chatroom #debian-devel (plus a few others).

Why not Facebook? Facebook is a closed system: all activities happen at one central place. Email, Jabber and IRC are open protocols, exchanging between many Free systems (and some non-free ones as well).

Imagine having an overprotecting mother, who allow you only to meet your friends at one spot in town - where she can look after you. You maybe have no secrets from your mom, but probably still appreciate the option of being alone - to have some privacy.

SMS is used to lock car doors Copenhagen Carpool soon receive a new batch of electric cars. The new cars will contain a cellphone tied to the door locks, to only let into the car the member who booked its current timeslot. I am setting up the system to connect the cars with their booking calendar. The general idea is to

1. Connect a standard cellphone to a computer.
2. Forward sms messages received on the phone to the calendar.
3. Send messages from the calendar through the phone.
4. Leave the system in a corner, turned on 24/7.

Most of my work is in trying to avoid ways things might go wrong which so often happens when computers are involved. What if

• messages are delayed or lost?
• a chain of messages arrive out of order?
• messages are sent faster than they can be delivered?

Reliable conversation Human conversation is most reliable when using plain speak. Slang, sarcasm or jokes raise the risk of misunderstandings. This is quite similar in computer conversation. When surfing the Web, you normally "GET" a web page or "POST" new data like a search query. The words "GET" and "POST" are "plain speak" of the World Wide Web defined as a principle called "REST" or "RESTful design". I use the Kannel tool to talk directly to the phones. When an sms arrives on the phone, Kannel "GET"s it to the calendar. That's weakly expressed better if it had "POST"ed the message instead. Kannel is a quite reliable tool, but not RESTful in conversations. That requires extra attention at other parts of the setup to avoid breakage in special situations. That worries me.

Each car has a blog So I setup a gateway from Kannel to RESTful conversation. And choose classic blogging as style of conversation:

• The carpool fleet is a blogroll
• each car has a blog
• each sms emitted from a car is a blog entry

Blogging comes in two flavors, RSS and Atom. Both cover distribution of messages. I use Atom because it is newest and coolest, and because it also covers creating and editing meesages with the AtomPub extension. AtomPub allows the calendar to create an empty message which then triggers an sms from the car which "fills it in." AtomPub also let the calendar "PUT" tags onto existing messages, to mark them as processed, read etc., and let an admin or a cleanup script "DELETE" outdated entries or blogs. The words "PUT" and "DELETE" are RESTful conversation as well.

The system is dancing! My sms-to-blog gateway is written in Perl, using the Dancer toolkit. Dancer makes it simple to setup a RESTful web conversation, and when I contacted the authors on IRC, they swiftly added support for the non-RESTful quirk that I needed. My sms-to-blog gateway is not yet ready, but basic routines work. The project is public, and code is Free Software.

My first morning in India I woke up very late in the house of Pavithrans parents. Pavithran was out organizing events for us, his father was at work, leaving me with his mother. She spoke little english - unsure if it was lack of skills or she was humble, or perhaps she just felt as shy as me in the situation. How to, ahem, do your thing at a restroom when there is no toilet paper but instead a bucket of water? I decided to not yell for help but use my imagination. How to eat breakfast local style? I knew from dinner previous night with Pavithran that local custom was to eat with my hands and that it (lucky for me) was tolerated in India to use left hand, so turned down the kind offer for a spoon. But were I supposed to mix rice with all the curries? Or one at a time? In which order? What if a curry was too hot to dip my fingers into? Was the liquid stuff to drink or to mix with the rice or eat afterwards? I asked for help, and first she just smiled at my alien useless language and then when I persisted, she patiently demonstrated with her hands in my food how to do. The only natural thing to do, really, and I dearly appreciate her help and patiency. But wauw, it was mind-blowing to me! Since early childhood, fingers in food is a forbidden thing: "Don't play with the food!". On top of that, having someone else handle my dish while at the table is something I associate with being very old and needing to be spoon-fed. In the afternoon we went for a small hike to an old stone fortress in the middle of Khammam - with a great view of the sun setting. Next day we went to Sarada Institute of Technology & Science where I gave my first talk to about 100 students. I had intended to provide concrete facts on Debian generally and on my pet project, Debian Pure Blends, but then the night before decided to radically shift focus to their situation in the early twenties - as best as I could imagine it. Pavithran had clearly expected a different style talk, but I liked it and believe it was received well by the audience as well. The teacher responsible for the event, Bhukya Jabber, afterwards asked for hints on running Debian at their computer lab. I suggested to not lock down access but instead make it easy to reinstall, and he explained how he was quite interested in a larger degree of learning-by-doing (which I had also promoted in my talk) but was constrained by curriculum dictated higher up in the educational system. Late that day Pavithrans father introduced me to CPM Khammam - the local offices and community center of the Communist Party - and to a colleague of his at the place, N. N. Rao. I instantly fell in love with the place and its atmosphere, and now have an open invitation to come back to spend 1-2 months to study and to collaborate with other users of the place (including some kids hosted there) on Free Software. Next morning we headed back by train to Hyderabad I am still amazed how radical it feels sticking my fingers into food. Not the physical feeling (I am not that disconnected from my body) but similar to a discovery I had as a teenager: After 7 years of piano lessons (and numerous other instruments less patiently) I gave up because I felt it was too difficult expressing personality through the instrument. After that I exclusively sang - as I had always done, but only now did I recognize my voice as a serious musical instrument. Similarly I now realized that eating with the fingers is not just yet another eating style like fork+knife or sticks - it is the natural one. Obviously, in hinsight. In september I visited Brussels, Belgium. EPFSUG had kindly invited me to give a talk about FreedomBox in the European Parliament, and together we extended to also visit other organizations - both grassroots and more formal. I returned home exhausted but also fuelled with renewed energy and passion, and decided to engage in more such activities. Also, an old promise of mine to visit friends in the Aceh region of Indonesia (whom I met in Taiwan a few years back) rumbled in the back of my head. After a bit of juggling with travel routes and sponsoring options, my course was set for a 2 month journey with Debian Pure Blends as main theme:
